Our Vision and Mission

Vision

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Students will help to ensure that fairness and respect are core values that enrich every student’s educational experience at the University of British Columbia. To advance the vision of Place and Promise: The UBC Plan to create an exceptional learning environment, the Ombuds Office will inspire and support a culture and spirit of fairness among all members of the university community, and will assist and empower students in successfully navigating their university life.

Mission

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Students will support students by ensuring that they are treated fairly in every aspect of their university life. The office will be a resource centre for students, faculty and staff to find information and receive guidance, consultation and advice about their concerns and issues relating to fair processes, practices and outcomes affecting students. As an advocate for fairness, the Ombuds Office will facilitate resolutions of problems and conflict and will investigate student complaints of unfairness that may lead to recommendations for change. The office will work proactively in providing education and collaborating with all UBC community members on matters related to fairness for students, and in promoting systemic improvements.

The most important human endeavour is the striving for morality in our actions. Our inner balance and even our very existence depend on it. Only morality in our actions can give beauty and dignity to life. To make this a living force and bring it to clear consciousness is perhaps the foremost task of education.
